ELODIE GUEGAND - Visual Artist

I am a visual painter who completed my degree course in Fine Arts from 1994 to 1998 with follow-up study at the Pantheon Sorbonne University in Paris.

I work in mixed media with acrylic medium format, various mediums and objects of all kinds.

My early research work on materials made it obvious to me that through my pictorial research I developed an obsession with wanting to reproduce the effect of time to wear down walls and metals. Later, in 1997, colour finally began to enter the composition of my paintings but very timidly.

There followed 10 years of artistic exile without touching a brush, but this was also a necessary time for reaching creative maturity.

It was not until 2008 that finally we can start to see other colours in my palette through a series of semi-figurative paintings.

It was at the start of 2009 that I launched into a series of colourful and monochrome works with materials: six paintings making up the rainbow flag painted between 2009 and 2010.

The year 2012 marks a new approach with the appearance of collage in my pictorial composition forming an interesting trio. This is a series of 9 paintings dealing with ecology that illustrate this technique.

It is also from this period that I began to wonder about consumer society; its excesses and especially recycling waste.

I decided in 2013 to focus my artistic process on the "Art of Reclamation". It's a fun way that I approach this new method, first by involving those around me to collect various and varied small objects worn by time, which have become obsolete in their eyes and that they wanted to get rid of. Then they entrusted them to me so I could assemble and incorporate the effects of various colours and materials in a series of six paintings.  And finally with some interest and amusement that my friends were able to find these objects diverted from their original use and staged on canvas to be sublimated.

In 2014, I decided to further my approach by asking this time for collection of an object of perfect insignificance which is doomed to be discarded after a single use: the can. I decided to cut, paint, rust, sand, burn and varnish them. I assembled them in various ways on the canvas in order to transcend it, to prove its existence so that eventually the container outweighs the content.

In 2015, I decided on a break from the “Art of Reclamation”. It was time for a recess and return to childhood but still with my techniques of material and colour ... Two distinct series were created in this vein.

With the first I decided to have fun with words.

In the second I revisited the cartoons of my childhood.
